How matching works

Five signals.
Every one explained.

Fit is scored out of 100 from five things investors and founders already use to judge each other. Here are the exact weights and rules – and a calculator to try them.

The signals

What counts,
and how much.

Each signal is scored from 0 to 100, then weighted. The weights add up to 100, so the final score reads as a percentage fit.

35%Sector
  • No overlap with the thesis: 0.
  • Overlap: 60 points, plus up to 40 more for how many of the startup’s sectors are covered.
  • A thesis that lists every sector doesn’t inflate the score – coverage is measured from the startup’s side.
25%Stage
  • The investor invests at the startup’s stage: 100.
  • One step away (say seed vs pre-seed): 50.
  • Further apart: 0.
20%Cheque size
  • The smallest cheque fits in what is still left to raise: 100.
  • It only fits the full round, which is mostly filled: 60.
  • Larger than the round, or the largest cheque is below the founder’s minimum ticket: 0.
15%Geography
  • The investor invests in the startup’s region: 100.
  • The investor invests globally: 90.
  • Otherwise: 0.
5%Revenue bar
  • The investor has no revenue bar, or the startup meets it: 100.
  • Below the bar: 0.

Then availability

A paused investor's score is halved, and a startup that isn't raising right now is scored at 60%. Reasons are listed matches first, then partial fits, then misses.

FAQ

Matching questions,
answered.

Yes. A startup and an investor always see the same number and the same reasons for each other – founders in their investor list, investors in their deal flow.
